Landscaping Stone

Caution: Be careful when working with heavy stone. You can be seriously hurt if using improper technique.

Unlike a grass lawn, rocks are fairly easy to maintain. Stone gives an amazing look and many benefits. You can put rocks anywhere, but prepare carefully. Installed correctly and they give you a beautiful, weed-resistant outdoor space with excellent drainage.

Start the weed prevention process before laying rocks and make sure to keep up with ongoing maintenance. Mulch can be layered directly on top of rock, if desired.

Here are some common types of landscaping rock:

  • Crushed Granite Gravel – Larger particles than decomposed granite. Natural look. Solution for transitions from plants to yard.
  • River Rock – Great addition to a central water element. Makes a great inorganic mulch. Slows erosion and stays in place.
  • Decomposed Granite – versatile, reduces water usage, sponge-like, natural-looking and keeps ground weed-free. Finer and more stable than gravel. Colors include brown, gray, black, red, and soft green.
  • Pea Gravel – pea shaped rocks typically 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch. Colors range from brown to white. Good driveway cover and filler. Great for creating walkways. A good weed barrier.
  • Lava Rock – A beautiful kind of igneous rock called obsidian. Gives a front yard stunning curb appeal. Lava stones are porous, allowing them to absorb and retain heat and moisture.
